Exhibition by Blac Dwelle at Carpintarias de São Lázaro
06.03.2026 - 03.05.2026
The title is inspired by the music of Cape Verdean artist Ildo Lobo, this exhibition being the continuation of an interdisciplinary artistic project that offers an in-depth reflection on the ancestry of artist Blac Dwelle and the narratives of Cape Verdean immigration in Portugal. The project focuses in particular on the experiences and life stories of Blac Dwelle's (Ricardo Piedade) family, as well as the voices and bodies that make up the complex social and demographic fabric of Greater Lisbon and the south bank of the Tagus, territories marked by migratory trajectories.
Through an artistic approach that combines sculpture, video and sound, the project immerses the viewer in the artist's family history, while paying homage to his Cape Verdean origins.
The works presented narrate the paths of this immigration in Portugal, highlighting the bodies and experiences that shape the urban and human fabric of these territories.
After an extensive period of research and development, and a first public presentation at PADA Studios, held with the support of a grant from FLAD – Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (Luso-American Development Foundation) and curated by Melissa Rodrigues, the project began its second and final phase of research in 2025.
The final presentation now takes place at Carpintarias de São Lázaro – Centro Cultural, in Lisbon, resulting from a co-production between the artist and Carpintarias involving a new exhibition design in dialogue with the space and the implementation of a public programme throughout the two months of the exhibition.
