atrás das mãos
madalena meneses
Curadoria: alice wr
atrás das mãos is madalena meneses's first large scale solo exhibition in Portugal and is the result of her artistic residency in a very special place, near Lyon (France), where she spent two months. This work also marks the artist's last ten years dedicated to analogue photography, and celebrates her first major chapter with the visual arts.
«atrás das mãos does not show us an external world. It shows the inside of things: the small gestures, the sideways glances, the bodies listening. The hands, sometimes present, sometimes absent, signal both intimacy and care — which is protected, which is offered, which is kept from the moment. (...) Together, they are a testimony of a moment lived with the Other, in a silent pact between presences. (...) atrás das mãos encourages the gaze to slow down, to listen, to belong, to be. The images do not impose themselves, they invite the continuity of the encounter — as if to say: I am here, with you, and this is already an image.»
