BoCA :: THE OTOLITH GROUP

Co-founded by Anjali Sagar and Kodwo Eshun, The Otolith Group produces films, audiovisual installations, and performances inspired on cognitive detachments methods derived from science fiction. Their film and video works embody a lens-based aesthetic that explores time-based anomalies, anthropic inversions, and the synthetic alienation of the posthuman, the inhuman, the non-human, and the anti-human.

"The Third Part of the Third Measure" (2017), an audiovisual composition commissioned by the Contemporary Art Institute of Philadelphia and Sharjah Biennial13, creates an encounter with the militant minimalism of the Afro-American avant-garde composer, pianist and singer Julius Eastman.

"The Third Part of the Third Measure" focuses on what The Otolith Group describes as "an experience of watching in the key of listening". It invokes both political feelings of defiance and the collective process of movement-building that participates in the global anti-authoritarian, neo-reactionary fights. 'The Third Part of the Third Measure' invites the viewers to witness the ecstasy aesthetics of black radicalism that Eastman himself once described as "full of honour, integrity and boundless courage."
